The manaia, usually show as a bird form, is regarded as a spiritual guardian. The design reflects the flight of the soul through life and beyond. It is often incorporated into other forms to add an the element of spiritual protection. This carving adds multiple Koru elements to reflect spiritual growth, the search for knowledge and piece.
