Walrus Ivory: Manaia Koru

 This contemporary design combines two traditional elements. The Manaia or bird form, is generally regarded as a spiritual guardian. The design represents the flight of the soul through life! The koru or fern form adds the element of spiritual growth and peace. The carving is 8.7cm x 4cm and is carved from an amazing piece of ancient Walrus Ivory. This material is collected by the Yupik people on St Lawerence island and the colour is from being buried for a very long time!
